Mode-Coupling Theory of Colloids with Short-range Attractions

چکیده
Within the framework of the mode-coupling theory of super-cooled liquids, we investigate new phenomena in colloidal systems on approach to their glass transitions. When the inter-particle potential contains an attractive part, besides the usual repulsive hard core, two intersecting liquid-glass transition lines appear, one of which extends to low densities, while the other one, at high densities, shows a re-entrant behaviour. In the glassy region a new type of transition appears between two different types of glasses. The complex phenomenology can be described in terms of higher order glass transition singularities. The various glass phases are characterised by means of their viscoelastic properties. The glass driven by attractions has been associated to particle gels, and the other glass is the well known repulsive colloidal glass. These correspondences, in associations with the new predictions of glassy behaviour mean that such phenomena may be expected in colloidal systems with, for example, strong depletion or other short-ranged attractive potentials.

Theory and simulation of gelation, arrest and yielding in attracting colloids
We present some recent theory and simulation results addressing the phenomena of colloidal gelation at both high and low volume fractions, in the presence of short-range attractive interactions. We discuss the ability of mode-coupling theory and its adaptations to address situations with strong heterogeneity in density and/or dynamics. We include a discussion of the effect of attractions on the...

Mode coupling theory (MCT) appears to explain several, though not all, aspects of the glass transition in colloids (particularly when short-range attractions are present). Developments of MCT, from rational foundations in statistical mechanics, account qualitatively for nonlinear flow behaviour such as the yield stress of a hard-sphere colloidal glass. Such theories so far only predict shear th...

We demonstrate that an extended picture of kinetic constraints in glass-forming liquids is sufficient to explain dynamic anomalies observed in dense suspensions of strongly attracting colloidal particles. We augment a simple model of heterogeneous relaxation with static attractions between facilitating excitations, in a way that mimics the structural effect of short-ranged interparticle attract...

Computer simulations were used to study the gel transition occurring in colloidal systems with short-range attractions. A colloid-polymer mixture was modeled and the results were compared with mode coupling theory (MCT) expectations and with the results for other systems (hard-spheres system and Lennard-Jones system). The self-intermediate scattering function and the mean squared displacement w...

Molecular dynamics simulation has been performed to analyze the effect of the presence of gold nanoparticle on dynamics of Kob-Anderson binary Lennard-Jones (BLJ) mixture upon supercooling within the framework of the mode coupling theory of the dynamic glass transition. The presence of gold nanoparticle has a direct effect on the liquid structure and causes the peaks of the radial distribution ...
